It can be difficult to understand university rankings and how different universities compare, so we’ve outlined our key global university research rankings below and provided the  indicators for each.

QS World University Rankings

  • #14 in Australia
  • #195 in the world

The QS World University Rankings rankings provide authoritative comparative analysis on the performance of the world’s top 1300 universities, which can be found in 97 locations.

Key indicators include academic reputation, citations per faculty, student-to-faculty ratio, employer reputation, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.

QS also highlights the world’s top universities in a range of popular subject areas. The rankings are based on academic reputation and research impact.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 lists the best global universities based on 13 core performance indicators including, teaching (30%), research (30%), research citations (30%), international outlook and industry income (2.5%).

Academic Rankings of World Universities

  • #12 in Australia
  • #201-250 in the world

Key indicators include the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, articles published in journals such as Nature and Science , articles indexed by Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), per capita academic performance of an institution.

Excellence in Research Australia

The Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative is an evaluation of research quality across 41 universities by the Australian Government.

Macquarie is currently placed in the top institutions for research, with 100 per cent of 2-digit research activity rated at world standard or above. Macquarie achieved a 50 per cent increase in the number of 4-digit fields of research that received the highest possible ‘5’ rating. Macquarie has maintained consistently excellent performance in Physical Sciences and Environmental Sciences, achieving the highest ERA ratings for these areas in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2018.

CWTS Leiden Ranking

The Leiden Ranking is based on bibliographic data from the Web of Science scientific citation index, which analyses the scientific performance of more than 900 major universities from 54 countries.

The ranking focuses on the scientific impact of universities, as well as their involvement in scientific collaboration.
